Clown: Roger Lewis

image
Nationality: Welsh
Role: WRU Chief Executive
Act of Clownery: Duplicity

Quoted on the BBC in February, WRU CEO Roger Lewis said that he wanted to central contracts for players that he claimed would be unable to stay in Wales otherwise.
"What we've said to the regions is please sign up [those Wales players coming out of contract] and if you're unable to, for whatever reason, we will then step in and help you and sign them with national contracts." - Roger Lewis 04/02/14
There were rumours that Saracens were interested in signing one of the out of contract players, one of Wales most valuable players over the past decade Adam Jones, only for their forwards coach Alex Sanderson poured cold water on them and they were essentially nothing, Saracens weren't in the market for a tighthead.

So with no offers, the Ospreys ought to have been able resign their long serving prop, who has been with them ever since their foundation in 2003. All sounds quite simple and straightforward.

However unfortunately they do have competition from an offer of a contract from Roger Lewis and the WRU. The same Roger Lewis who said the WRU would only "sign them with national contracts" if the regions were "unable to".

Adam Jones only has two offers so it has become increasingly clear the WRU are not preventing players from going to France as they claimed, but competing with their regions in Wales for players. Ospreys CEO Andrew Hore has noted that they ignored a written agreement.

So Roger Lewis has quite simply been lying. He portrayed the WRU to the media as the good guys wanting to stop the player drain to England and France. In reality he is the guy who wants absolute control of Welsh rugby and is competing with regions signing players, needlessly driving up wages and wasting money in the name of power grabbing.
